Why Saltwater Fishing Is Better than Freshwater
So… fishing in lakes, streams and rivers is great right? It really is great, however, I am not convinced that freshwater fishing can compare to fly fishing saltwater. The ocean has a certain wonder to it and the fishing opportunities are amazing.
My favorite thing about fishing the ocean is that you never really know exactly what you’re going to catch. With freshwater fishing you usually have a pretty good idea. If you’re fly fishing in a Montana river you almost certainly are going to have a trout or maybe a sucker at the end of your line, or if you’re slowly dragging a plastic worm along the bottom of a pond in Texas there’s a very good chance that you’ll be catching bass. But in the ocean anything can happen. The things that I have pulled (or seen other people pull) out of the ocean are amazing: large feisty sharks, stingrays, starfish, crazy poisonous fish with stingers that can kill you, and God only knows what else. The point I am trying to make is that you really never know what you’re going to catch, and there is something about that that is certainly more interesting and exciting about that.
Another obvious reason why I like fishing the ocean is the size of fish that you can catch. If you get lucky freshwater fishing in the United States than you might be able to catch something that gets into triple digits, a huge catfish or something. But that’s nothing compared to what you can catch in the ocean. You can battle fish in the ocean that are truly monstrous. Marlin, tuna, shark, tarpon, dorado… there are so many large, beautiful saltwater fish. Fishing the ocean is a blast.
