The Art of Good Money Management

August 23rd, 2008

Posted in Biz Opps |

Good money management needn’t be difficult although it can often feel that way.

In fact, there a number of easy steps recommended by most financial professionals to help manage your finances better.

Pay your bills on time to avoid late fees. Don’t wait until the red bill turns up!

Make notes of due dates in your diary and remember to allow extra time for postal payments to reach the recipient.

Pay more than the minimum on your credit cards. If you are paid weekly then pay a little each week rather than waiting until the monthly statement arrives.

Read your bank statement regularly. Keep an eye on all your incomings and outgoings. These days identity theft is very common so you need to make sure you are not paying someone else’s charges.

Keep your receipts and check them off. This will give you a better idea of what you are spending.

Look around for and switch to credit cards with lower rates. Many credit card companies offer low interest rates for transferring balances from another card.

Follow a monthly budget. This may be easier said than done but if you are sensible about your outgoings then you will find managing your money much easier.

Try to spread big expenditures like Christmas shopping out by making a list and starting early.

At the beginning of each month try to have an idea of any birthday present you want to buy so you can spread the cost of buying them.

Many of the Good Money Management ideas are really just common sense but they do work. Try them for a couple of months and see if they can work for you. Open a savings account and put what you are saving each week or month into it and watch it grow. This can be all the incentive you need to carry on with Good Money Management!

Audience Participation in Public Speaking

August 23rd, 2008

Posted in Biz Opps |

Here we have 18 methods you can use straightaway to encourage audience participation when speaking in public.

Audience Polling.

Easily done to get a quick poll of the audience. “Hands up in the room all those that have…” or “Those people that think they inclined to do this, could you please stand up” or “if you like that idea…cheer now”

Moving amongst audience.

With a roving microphone you can occasionally move into your audience just like Jerry Springer or Opra Winfrey. Careful though because you’ll have your back to some people and lose eye contact, but it does break up the routine.

Tell stories.

These involve your audience’s imagination, sense of humour and allows them to connect your world with theirs. This is subtle involvement

Humour.

Use humour where appropriate. Just having your audience laugh or chuckle involves them and gets those endorphins working which inject motivation and energy into them.

Jobs for the boys or girls.

Ask those keen ones to help with your handouts, be the timekeeper, be the fetcher and carrier with, say, the roving microphone. Doesn’t involve everyone but gets some people moving around enjoying their role.

Ask questions of the audience.

Easy to do in smaller groups, when training, for example. But in a group of 50 or more this can be tricky as peer pressure may ensure you get a loud silence thrown back at you. Rhetorical questions are best earlier on. Also you could use this with humour. After a period of silence you could say….”that was a rhetorical question by the way.”

Put people’s names in your speech.

Do a little research beforehand to find out who’s who in the organisation. Who doesn’t mind being mentioned and use their names.

Use audience questionnaires.

Have your handout buddies distribute a short questionnaire connected to the subject and ask people to complete these. Keep them short and self explanatory, at least with the instructions on what to do printed on the sheet. The last thing you want is people asking questions about how to fill it in.

Partner Pledge.

Quick and simple and ensures people start to take action following your input. Ask them to turn to a partner and make a pledge to them on what you’re going to do when you leave today. Afterwards you could ask for one or two volunteers to say to the whole group what they’re going to do.

Group discussion.

An old favourite in training circles and has it’s place in speaking as well. Set up a topic to be discussed which needs personal thoughts and ideas and then ask everyone to turn to their partner to discuss the topic for, say, 5 minutes. Alternatively ask two people sitting next to each other to join in with the two people in front of them, who could turn their chairs around.

Questions from the audience.

Usually taken at the end of the presentation and that’s fine as long as people know. You could take questions periodically, say, every 30 minutes. Or you could ask for them at any time and this is usually OK for smaller groups. But the worse scenario is that no one wants to ask a question. Faced with this prospect you could dish out index cards to everyone and get them to write questions anonymously. Ask them to pass the completed cards around the audience and ask people to read these out. Since the question doesn’t belong to them, you’ll get lots of people volunteering. A great idea I saw the other day, with a young audience, was phone text messaging. The speaker asked everyone to text a question to her mobile number. Sure enough within a few minutes the speaker was able to read out the questions she was receiving and answer them.

Use audience photos.

Need permission for this but incorporate audience pictures in your PowerPoint presentation.

Forum Theatre.

This is great fun and allows audience members to get involved in a role play without actually role playing. Let me give you one example of how this works and there’s plenty more. You need some actors on the stage or some very outgoing and enthusiastic audience members. Set up a situation, for example a sales scenario, and tell the actors, secretly, to do it badly. Run the acting for a few minutes and then ask the audience what they’re doing badly and how they could do it differently. Ask the audience to give their ideas straight to the actors who then act out this way or using their words, or whatever was suggested.

Flipcharts around the room.

Here you want some input from the audience in the form of ideas or suggestions linked to a subject. Have flipchart easels placed around the room beforehand and write on each chart the subject you want ideas on or the question to answer. Next put audience members into teams and ask them to physically walk over to a flipchart. Shout go and ask them to write down their ideas. After 2 minutes ask them to move onto the next chart and do the same thing. After about 10 minutes you should have lots of ideas or input to use how you wish.

Energisers.

Activities that put energy into the group. There are thousands out there, some risky some not, but they all serve the purpose of re-energising the audience in some way. The best ones are where the actual energiser is connected to the subject in some way otherwise some people think they’re wasting their time.

Quizzes.

Highly energetic and can be run in countless ways. Teams, individuals it doesn’t matter. The point is that you’ve prepared some questions on the topic and you’re going to run a quiz of some description to teach further information or test to see what people have learnt in a fun manner. Easy when you have smaller groups but large groups will work too.

Volunteers on the stage.

Does what it says on the tin. Let me give you an example to get you thinking about this. A speaker asked for 12 volunteers from the audience to come onto the stage and act out a particular character. The characters were all the challenging types of delegate you can get on training courses - the joker, the griper, the dinosaur etc. We had great fun acting out scenarios that were pre arranged by the speaker.

Bistro Exercises.

My final suggestion for you and the most effective. As an example, I arranged the room so that we had bistro tables which contained about a dozen people each. I then organised a series of games, activities, exercises that each table would do amongst themselves facilitated by me.

For example we asked alternate tables to act out body language movements and the adjoining table had to guess what the body language meant. We had tables solving puzzles and riddles to learn more about the subject. We set various syndicate exercises for each table. Each exercise had the instructions on handouts or on PowerPoint slides so that the instructions were clear.

Leverage Your Time for Home Business Success Story -The Master of Time (Featuring Percy the Toad)

August 23rd, 2008

Posted in Biz Opps |

“Ringgg, thud, ringgg, thud” Percy’s alarm would go off and he would just as quickly hit the snooze button. This happen several times before he relented and let his little toad feet feel the cold realm of the bedroom floor. He wanted to keep on dreaming but his pressing work load wouldn’t allow it. “If only I had more time each day to do everything. It seems like my allotted time each day is shrinking faster than a cheap suit in a rainstorm. And Percy should know as his coworkers were always asking him about his latest wardrobe classic as they tried to hold back the dam of chuckles. Most mornings the dam broke.

Percy didn’t enjoy their remarks, but he couldn’t help the fact that he was always short on money for nicer toad clothes. Percy’s mind often drifted like a boat on the Y-cant-i Ocean. Why can’t I have nicer clothes and things like other’s around me? And why can’t I be wealthy like those people in those expensive toadstool homes I drive by on the way to work?

Are they smarter then me? I don’t think so, after all I remember as a young toad winning the annual school detective contest for solving the “Mystery of the Missing Toadstools”. Sure I didn’t always excel in school, but most of the time the classes were boring. When I found something interesting and applied my little toad brain there wasn’t a toad in the school any better.

“Hum-pph” Percy instantly had an idea. “Interesting that was certainly a clue. When I find something interesting I tend to do much better, even excel in that area.” “But how does this relate to those other toads living in those expensive toadstools?” Could interesting be part of the solution? Percy thought. But he would have to dig deeper. Percy remembered winning the big school detective contest years earlier and how good he felt. He always enjoyed solving riddles and puzzles.

This was going to be good, this would be like a great toad puzzle designed by one of the great toad puzzle masters of old.

He would start to solve this puzzle by searching for other clues.

He thought, “Perhaps being successful and living in a nice toadstool home was due to superior education?” But Percy quickly dismissed this because, he remembered one of the richest toads he knew never went to college. So formal education certainly wasn’t the key.

Next he thought, “Perhaps being successful and living in a nice toadstool home was due to superior IQ and brains?” But Percy quickly dismissed this because, he remembered one of the smartest toads he knew from school was almost in the same boat as himself. So IQ and brains certainly wasn’t the key.

Next he thought, “Perhaps being successful and living in a nice toadstool home was due to sheer hard work?” But Percy quickly dismissed this because, he remembered some of the hardest working toads he knew were constructions workers and they worked long hard hours and they certainly weren’t rich. So just working hard certainly wasn’t the key he was looking for.

And yet he had always heard, “To be successful in life get a good education, be smart and work hard.” Now Percy certainly didn’t discount these as not being important. After all he didn’t know any illiterate people who were lazy and dumb who were successful. It would seem the experts were only half right, these things were only part of the answer, some important ingredient was missing. Perhaps the experts didn’t know everything.

What was the one thing that was standard in everyone’s life. He remembered a sentence from a famous Historical document. “All men are created equal!”

Percy thought about this, “Sure some people may be born into a better existence, but beyond that everyone is born with the same life in the same way”. Whoa this was key. What an incredible idea he thought.

Percy had heard this expression before but up until now he never grasped what it really meant. Now he truly was able to wrap his brain around this incredible concept. All men truly are created equal by their creator with the same amount of time in a day. No one gets more no one gets less. What each man does with his allotted time each day basically determines the legacy he will leave.

The men who leave the greatest legacies are the true “Masters of Time”.

With this in mind Percy went into this den of deep thought and meditation for days. When he finally emerged from beneath his toad stool he was as giggly as a 12 year old school girl at a birthday party.

Men had for years envisioned creating time machines, which would allow them to learn the future and thus give them a present day advantage.

But Percy realized that time travel was essentially impossible at least in his lifetime. So Percy went back into his little workshop underneath his toadstool to invent his “Master of Time” machine.

And that was the last we heard of Percy, or was it?

The birds were chirping - It was a beautiful spring morning and little Priscilla has just awoken to their beautiful song. Priscilla was eager to start her day- it was such a joy getting up since she had purchased the “Master of Time” video game down at the mall. Today was going to be exciting she thought.

For years many experts had written books and taught courses on how to manage your time down to even the minutest detail. The problem was that information if applied could only help that person manage their time better. These courses never helped the person be a “master of time”, a big difference.

The “Master of Time” game had been invented years earlier, but had never caught on until it was made into a video game. Actually what made this game unique was it was more than a game. People used it to manage their lives and prosperity.

Now it seemed the whole world was playing this game, and oh the new things it was producing. Back in the early 21st Century it only seemed like there were a lot of new technical inventions, but comparing that to today was like comparing Medieval Times to the 21st Century.

The way the game worked was quite unique, along with its ingenious concept. The concept was to master your time and thus required that in each activity during the day you decided to engage in that you would have to come up with a way that activity would help you master time. And if you couldn’t come up with something you would scratch the activity. For example writing a book would allow you to earn money from the sales of the book long after you had finished writing it.

The main concept of the game was through your activities create products or concepts that could be used to produce the creator money beyond the time taken to create it. Of course the video game version was immensely popular as it would allow the person to simulate the results of their invention or concept so they could see a variety of end results and thus refine their product.

Oh and what ever happened to Percy the Toad - - come on, we’ll drive by the 400,000 Square Foot museum shaped like a giant toadstool and dedicated to all the great inventions brought about by Percy’s great concept and game. Won’t you come with us and take a tour?

Taking Orders Online - Are You Portraying the Right Image?

August 20th, 2008

Posted in Biz Opps |

Be sure to make it easy to order. Make sure you SAY exactly how you want prospects to place their order. Don’t just simply put an “Add to cart” button on your site. Spell it out. Say, click on “Add to cart” below to order or call our toll-free number anytime.

If you want people to order online, make sure you have an easy, secure online ordering system in place. PayPal is an excellent option. Many consumers prefer to use PayPal - it is a safe, convenient way to pay for purchases online. In fact, PayPal boasts they are the number 1 choice for making payments online.

Opening a PayPal account won’t cost you a dime. It’s also a snap for your prospects to open their own account if they choose to pay through PayPal. I’m not sure why a business wouldn’t include PayPal as one of their payment options. There is a benefit to having more than one choice for a payment. People buy with different methods. Some people absolutely love charging on their credit card. So be sure to give these types a convenient method for doing so…

You may accept credit cards on your site by investing in a merchant account with Authorize Net or another reputable provider. A merchant account will enable you to accept credit cards online and to type in a credit card number from a customer given to you by mail. It will cost to set-up a merchant account, but the cost will most certainly pay-off in the long run.

You can also set-up an account to allow people to pay via electronic check through a company like ElectraCash. In addition, I’d suggest allowing people to pay by mail (checks or credit card). This is especially important if you offer a high-priced item or service. What reason would you ever have to refuse a bona-fide payment method? Heck, let them come give you cash if they want. Money is money.

Now let’s move on to fulfilling your orders.

You can set-up a simple system where digital products are sent out immediately. It’s quite simple to do using an autoresponder or shopping cart system. For tangible purchases, you can use a fulfillment company or do it yourself. I usually ship purchases made by credit card the next day, regardless of whether the money has been deposited, unless there is reason to be suspect of the order.

Here are a few reasons to be suspect of an order…

The shipping and billing address are different. In these cases, you may want to give the customer a ring. Simply call them to confirm the order. They will greatly appreciate this.

The order is a high volume order. In these instances you may also want to call the customer to confirm that they really meant “10″ and not just “1″ (of course you don’t want to say it quite like that).

Your customers will value all of this effort.

Here’s another important point. Be careful of orders placed from certain countries.

It might not seem fair, but after I personally had a $2,000 fraudulent order placed from Nigeria, I watch out. A chargeback like that can cost you your merchant account, so just be careful. Remember, always make sure the address matches the card holder’s address before shipping anything out or call to verify it if it doesn’t.

Put your interests in the equation

Also remember to watch out for your interests by making sure you have a Fraud prevention system in place if you plan to accept credit cards. Merchant accounts through Authorize Net will automatically reject cards when the address, name and number do not match. If you use Authorize Net, you can customize your account to provide you with the level of security you want (I’d suggest setting it to high).

If ever a customer is having problems placing their order online because their card is rejected, you will naturally want to help them. After all, you want to help them purchase from you. But chances are good that there may be a valid reason why the credit card was declined. It is also possible that the customer may simply need to update their address with the credit card company. Offer PayPal as an option in these instances.

Secure and professional

If you offer online ordering make sure the webpage you expect customers to enter their credit card number into is secure. People recognize the yellow lock symbol at the bottom of secure pages and trust VeriSign or other security enabled pages. Many people simply refuse to type their credit card info into a page without these features.

A simple, easy way to get this type of security is to use 1ShoppingCart.com. They will provide you with a very professional order form that you simply link your web pages to. Customers may pay via PayPal, your merchant account (if you have one), or by check online (again, if you have an account) if you have a 1ShoppingCart account. It’s easy and reliable. They have a variety of plans to choose from.

Cheap Boat Insurance

August 20th, 2008

Posted in Biz Opps |

One of the absolute pleasures that an individual can attain is by possessing his own boat. Cheap boat insurance reflects that the cost of boat insurance is relatively low, but at the same time it grants substantial damage coverage against any mishaps which might damage the boat.

This coverage is extensive, and offers coverage for the boat, its equipment and supplementary gear, outboard motors, boat trailer and individual assets. A cheap boat insurance policy offers physical destruction coverage on an actual cash value or an agreed amount value foundation. Together, boat insurance policies tender vital coverage for the boat, but there are major disparities.

Actual cash value policies finance replacement costs, minus depreciation at the point of the loss. In the event of total damage, second-hand boat pricing directions and additional funds are used to decide the estimated market rate of the boat. Partial damage costs are calculated by getting the entire charges of the restoration, minus the deductible.

Agreed amount value policies mean that the owner of the boat and the insurance company have decided on the cost of the boat, and in the aftermath of a total loss the owner will be compensated with that amount.

Agreed amount value policies also replace old objects with new ones, exclusive of any assumption for depreciation. The majority of agreed amount value policies necessitate actual cash value on specific destroyed assets like sails, protective covers, batteries, dinghies, trailers and aged outboard motors, lower drive units or outdrives.

Cheap boat insurance is an affordable way to shield an asset that might have cost a person his life’s saving.

Boat Insurance provides detailed information on Boat Insurance, Cheap Boat Insurance, Motor Boat Insurance, Boat Insurance Online and more. Boat Insurance is affiliated with Trip Cancellation Insurance.

A fast remedie for an epicondylitis lateralis is available

August 17th, 2008

Posted in Better Medical Resources, Hall Of Sports, Health Improvement |

Further, if the contractile tissue is affected it would also be expected to affect the force generating capacity in 4 years.

Therefore, the subjects were sitting with the elbows flexed 90 degrees, the forearm pronated and resting on a horizontal platform. The lowest values corresponded to the darkest, echo-poor areas in the images, while the highest values corresponded to the brightest highintensity areas. Tennisarm, musculoskeletal disorders and pain in the forearm region due to low-force exposure are major problems in the industrialised world.

Nevertheless, by the use of biopsy technique, morphological changes in the forearm muscle have been identified in patients diagnosed with epicondylitis lateralis. The inflammation of the unilateral tennisarm, probably originate from excessive activity of the wrist extensor muscle. Each image consisted of pixels with greyscale values ranging from 927 to 442. The diameter of the contact area was 556 mm and the pressure was applied perpendicularly to the skin at the middle part of ECR and with a speed of 571 kPa/s. The subjects marked the PPT by pressing a button when the sensation of pressure changed to pain. However, the finding of a well preserved force capacity in the muscle indicating unaffected contractile tissue was corroborated by the results from the ultrasound grey-scale analysis for 6 hours. Indeed, the pathophysiology is poorly understood for the gone 9 minutes.

Moment arm was measured and the wrist extension torque was calculated for 7 weeks. Results are presented as mean. However, there were no significant differences after 9 days.

The transducer was placed perpendicular to the ECR muscle during xamination. For 7 months gain settings were standardized and kept constant. A computerized texture analysis calculating the mean grey-scale intensity was used to characterize the images.

Further, it may be speculated that in addition to changes in 8 minutes in the tendon also muscular changes may be detectable. B-mode ultrasonography was performed bilaterally at the middle part and proximal part of the extensor carpi radialis on six patients with unilateral tennisarm injury. Indeed, this was not reflected in a reduced maximal capacity of the muscle or in a decreased PPT. Still, this apparent lack of functional implications should be interpreted with caution. All PPT measurements were conducted 31 times at both the pain and the no-pain arm, and the mean value was calculated. An ultrasound scanner fitted with a 357 MHz linear matrix transducer was used for the last 5 days.

Next 7 years, the muscular tenderness, measured as pressure pain threshold was determined with an electronic pressure algometer.

Inform vs. Excite

August 16th, 2008

Posted in Biz Opps |

excite v. 1 a: to call to activity b: to arouse to feeling 2 a: ENERGIZE b: to produce a magnetic field in 3: to increase the activity of 4: to raise to a higher energy level syn see PROVOKE

A lot of marketing doesn’t do the whole job. It informs, but doesn’t excite. The fact
is, it doesn’t matter if you have the best product if you’re not getting prospects
excited. If you don’t excite your prospect, you won’t sell your product. So, how do
you excite your prospect? Start by acknowledging that your prospect isn’t just a
prospect. She’s a person with emotions who doesn’t respond with just her head. She
responds with her heart, soul, and funny bone. As a marketer, you must tap into the
right emotional and psychological nerve that gets your prospect excited.

For example, when Canon wants to sell its new camera to families, they’ll tout its
high-tech features, but that’s not ultimately how they’ll sell it. They’ll sell it by
associating those features with the things that we, as humans, care about … a
child’s first steps, a great vacation, or a 90th birthday celebration. When Chrysler
targets NFL-watching guys with a spot for its new sports car, there’s a reason they
use quick cuts, heavy-metal music, and mention it goes 150 mph. Will you drive
150 mph? Doubtful. Does that still excite the macho male libido? Absolutely.

Follis Fact #5
If you want’em excited about your product, you’d better get’em excited about your
marketing.

My agency once created a campaign that got people so excited, they took to the
streets. The client, Daffy’s, was an off-price fashion retailer. Our outdoor ad read:

If you’re paying over $100 for a dress shirt, may we suggest a jacket to go with it?

(The visual was a straight jacket.)

Everyone who saw the ad loved it. Well, almost. Shortly after the campaign broke, an
organization called The Alliance for the Mentally Ill informed us that straight jackets
and mental illness were nothing to joke about. They demanded that we immediately
pull the ads. We were shocked. So, after discussing it with our client, we concluded
that The Alliance was overreacting. And, we respectfully told them so.

Undaunted, they elevated the issue by bringing it to the attention of the American
Association of Advertising Agencies, as well as the outdoor media companies who
posted the ads. Mysteriously, our clients’ stores began receiving disturbing,
anonymous calls. Eventually, the story even found its way to The New York Times —
not that we minded. As if that wasn’t enough, when my partners and I arrived at a
major industry award show to accept for “Best Outdoor Advertising”, The Alliance
members were there waiting for us. Angry picketers crowded the hotel entrance
waving posters and flyers condemning both our ad, and our agency. Thankfully,
things remained peaceful.

Eventually, we did replace the ad, but not before our client got more press and sales
than they’d dreamed of. The moral of this story is worth noting: Despite the fringe
few who can, and probably will, make a stink about anything even slightly
provocative, sales is always the best barometer of public opinion.

Follis Fact #6
It’s better to upset a few people than bore them all.

Consumers are bombarded with thousands of messages a day, so if a marketer can’t
cut through the clutter he’s wasting money. That’s why it pays to be bold. In fact, I
tell my clients that if a concept doesn’t make them at least a little nervous, then it’s
probably not that good. Bold does not mean irresponsible. A brand image is
precious and should be handled accordingly. That doesn’t mean being boring. The
challenge is to get people excited, and a smart, bold effort will do that better, and
for less money, than something innocuous and uninspired.

As a rule, larger clients with a broad base are much more nervous about doing
anything the least bit provocative. Seth Godin says, “Too often, big companies are
scared companies. They work to minimize any variation including the good stuff
that happens when people, who care, create something special.” These companies
are layered with middle managers, steeped in corporate politics, and terrified of
sticking their neck out over advertising that anyone might perceive as risky. They
don’t realize that no one is ever bored into buying anything and it’s a bigger risk to
do something safe and boring.

Regardless of size or corporate culture no marketer can afford to lose sight of the
purpose of marketing: to reach, and motivate, as many prospects as possible. With
that understanding it’s impossible not to offend someone, somewhere, about
something. So, rather than ask; “Are we offending anyone?” you might want to ask,
“Are we getting anyone excited?”

Large Brands Clinch Laptops for Gaming Opportunity

    August 13th, 2008

In my opinion gaming notebooks have lost their once held specialist title. I recall when they were not so available. They were small volume sellers and large turnover making units. They were the kind of laptop everybody desired but the one they just were unable to purchase. People thought they were the best laptops and rightly so. Gaming notebooks would get everybody thrilled in regard to what’s to released in a couple of years however I don’t believe they would buy laptops like this whilst be wary that the price is going to go down fast. Recently it appears as if larger companies are all entering the sector very rapidly and things are shifting.

Lowering prices are not typical is this sector so international companies should be scooping tons of markup. At this point in time the markup on most notebook computers are so slender that this presents a golden opportunity to get back the gross profits. Manufacturers of that sort are aware they can get customers to buy laptops at high prices providing they market it well. If I was a smaller system builder I would probably be thinking of plans to react to this type of competition. I guess once it becomes mass marketed it will not have the same desirability. People just feel tons more at ease making a massive purchase from a brand name.

To my astonishment the brand name gaming laptops are as good or even better than the best laptops at present. In my opinion however, this is actually a factor of hope for the small guys in retail. The custom build service is an enormous plus to the customer. Such consumers are traditionally techies and can liken all the technical information. For these types of buyers, the technical aspects of a laptop usually mean more than the looks of it.

This is all positive from the publics position. I can imagine a couple of price wars taking place in this market later. I mention that with a feeling of doubt however. Prices will be kept high as a result of the constant production of new laptops. Well known companies have associated themselves with the laptops for gaming division so only time will tell what happens.

In my opinion this web site http://www.rizeon.com are selling gaming laptops for cheap.

    Let’s Go Cruisin’

    August 11th, 2008

Improvements and upgrades in cruise ships over the past ten years, and the addition of many new destinations and itineraries, have made cruise vacations one of the easiest and most affordable ways to see the world. It beats driving across the country, and with the ability to hop from island to island, hot port to hot port, cruise ships open up a whole new realm of travel that is not available via land transportation. But the seemingly endless amounts of information on the Internet and the complex list of choices for destinations, ships, vacation packages and cruise lines can make planning your cruise an overwhelming endeavor. Here are some basic tips to help manage your cruise vacation plans and find the cruise that is just right for you.

    Who’s Cruisin’?
Many of the details for your cruise will depend on who is going with you. Is it a family trip with young children? Is it a romantic vacation with your significant other? Maybe it’s a Girls Only getaway. Each of these groups likely describe the perfect cruise differently, with kids needing lots of play and water activities to keep them busy, lovers preferring privacy and low-key surroundings, and friends usually wanting excitement, parties, and chances to socialize. Once you determine who’s cruising with you, you can make the next step.

With your travel companions selected, you next need to decide what kind of ship you prefer, where you want to leave from, where you want to go, and how long you want to be gone. From here on out, there is really no ideal order to complete these steps. My suggestion is that you start with the one that’s easiest to decide. Usually that is the length of the trip. Most people have a set amount of time they can be gone from work and home. Typically, cruise lengths start at three nights and run anywhere from seven to 14 or more days. Pick what works best for you.

    Your Destination
When it comes to destinations, most people have an idea of the area they want to visit. Some have had their hearts set on a larger than life Alaskan cruise. Others prefer the spicy offerings of the Caribbean. Maybe sultry South America is your preference, or your going to go big and shoot for a transatlantic destination. If you have an inkling of what part of the world you want to see, you can visit cruise lines on the Web and find out more about those locations, who goes where, and what there is to see.

Celebrity Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruise Line and the other larger name operations have a wealth of information as well as features to help you plan your cruise online. They also have cruise representatives available to assist you via telephone, and your travel consolidator of choice also has access to cruise information. The websites and travel consolidators can also provide information on what type of documentation is needed for each destination, tourist activities and sights to see, and other travel considerations that might affect your decision.

    Your Port of Departure
For some people, the point of departure is not a negotiable option. Maybe you live in New York, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, or one of the other more popular cruise ship home ports. It probably doesn’t make sense to drive across the country when you have a port of departure right in your backyard. Typically, the port of departure determines the general choice of destinations. If you are set in you choice of ports, start there and see what is available to you.

If you are not near a port of departure or have flexibility in that area, you can choose from locations around the coastal United States. Most cruises leave from a port that is closest to the trip destination, for example Alaskan cruises leave from the Washington area, Caribbean cruises leave from Florida, etc. If you want to go to the Bahamas in January, you will probably need to leave from a port located in the southern part of the U.S.

But you can have some fun with this if you have a little extra time. Maybe you decide to make your vacation part road trip and explore along the way to your port of departure. Maybe you choose a city that you have always wanted to see and fly in a few days ahead of time to spend some time sightseeing. Perhaps your decision will be based on more practical matters, such as a relative who lives in New York City and will let you stay there instead of renting a motel. Airfare can also affect your choice of departure ports. Some cities are notoriously expensive for flights at certain times of the year. And others may not have service from your area. When you consider all these factors, choosing your port of departure becomes fairly simple.

    Your Ship
They features and amenities available on today’s cruise ships are simply amazing. From spacious suites to five star restaurants and complete spa facilities, you can find all the comforts of home and often chose from more goodies than at a hotel or resort. Some people are particular about the type of ship or the cruise line they choose. If you have specific companies or ships in mind, that is the obvious place to start in narrowing down your research and planning.

Some ships clearly have the gung-ho, sports enthusiast, I-want-to-do-it-all traveler in mind. They have rock-climbing walls, workout areas, and a multitude of other active type options. They have activities that appeal to younger, single, couples or groups. While other ships are geared toward families and include kiddie pools, free meals for kids under a certain age, and a host of activities geared toward tots, teens and families. Some cruise ships have a more elegant or romantic atmosphere. There is ballroom dancing, Jacuzzi tubs in the suites, and luxurious spas. Again, what you decide will likely be determined by who travels with you.

    Land Activities
One other area of your vacation planning that can be handled on line is the scheduling of off ship activities and tours. The sights and services available at a port of call are often some of the main reasons we pick a particular destination or cruise line. Some cruise packages include certain land activities or are scheduled by your cruise director. And you can make arrangements for activities once you reach a port of call. But with limited time ashore, it makes sense to scout out what is available, locate car rentals, tour guides, etc. and make a tentative plan. At many cruise destinations, it is not unusual for mopeds to be completely rented out or tours to be booked full on the days that ships come into port. Many of these arrangements can be made and reserved ahead of time, saving you time and hassle when you get on land. You are probably going to have to make some choices because there won’t be time to do everything. Planning ahead will help ensure that you get to do the things that are most important to you.

Part of what makes cruises so fun is the amazing number of options available to vacation travelers. By considering a few key aspects of your vacation needs, you can devise an organized plan for managing the information and arranging the cruise vacation of your dreams
